Empower poor people's organisation
About our organisation
The Centre for Community Organisation and Development (CCODE) is a dedicated advocate for the urban poor in Malawi. Established in 2003 as a Trust under the Trustees Incorporation Act, and later certified as a non-profit organisation by the Non-Governmental Organizations Regulatory Authority (NGORA) in 2006, CCODE has spent over two decades working to empower poor people’s organisations to create lasting change in their communities.
Our mission is simple
“Empower poor people’s organisations”. By empowering these groups, we envision a society where individuals living in poverty have the agency and tools to transform their own lives for the better.
At CCODE, we focus on the urban poor
those who reside in informal settlements and slums. Despite constituting more than 65% of the urban population in Malawi, they face immense challenges: limited access to basic services, insecure housing, no legal tenure, and the constant threat of eviction. They are excluded from economic opportunities, marginalised by city policies, and left out of development planning. Often invisible in resource allocation, these communities contribute significantly to the vitality of urban areas, yet are denied the recognition and rights they deserve.
We work alongside these communities to challenge these injustices, co-creating programmes that tackle critical issues in housing, basic services, climate change, governance, and livelihoods. Our approach is rooted in collaboration and community leadership, ensuring that the voices of the urban poor are heard and their needs addressed. At CCODE, we are committed to breaking the barriers to meaningful participation and creating pathways for the urban poor to fully enjoy their rights as citizens. Together, we can build a more just and equitable future for all.
